Sporting politics is making way for women: after Kirsty Coventry’s coronation as head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), today we record the first woman president in cycling.
The Spanish Professional Cyclists’ Association (ACP) has announced that Isabel Martín Martín has been elected as the new president of the Iberian cycling association. The 25-year-old from Valladolid is still active, unlike the leaders of the other national associations united in the CPA, the world riders’ union, and this season is racing for the Portuguese team Matos Mobility Flexaco IHS.

‘With this appointment, the ACP begins a new phase under the leadership of a rider who has first-hand knowledge of the needs and challenges of the professional peloton,’ says the ACP in a statement, in which it reiterates its ‘willingness to collaborate with teams, organisers, federations and all institutions involved in cycling to further improve conditions for professionals.’ Furthermore, the ACP expresses its appreciation to the previous board of directors for their dedication.
“It is an honour to take on this responsibility and to work in defence of my colleagues. In ACP we will continue to fight for safety, workers’ rights and the development of cycling in all its facets,” added Isabel Martín, who has already been active in previous seasons as the CPA Women representative for the application of the protocol for extreme weather conditions and safety issues in racing.
After having defended the colours of Bizkaia Durango (2019), Massi – Tactic Women Team (2020), Rio Miera – Cantabria Deporte (2021-22) and Eneicat – CMTeam (2023-24), she will now be engaged in a double activity, on and off the bike, for the benefit of her colleagues.
